VILNIUS

Vilnius is Lithuania’s capital and largest city, home to about 590,000 people, first mentioned in 1323 and long shaped by its position between Baltic, Slavic and Central European worlds. It’s best known for its UNESCO-listed Old Town—one of Europe’s largest—where Baroque churches, courtyards and cobbled lanes run from Cathedral Square and Gediminas’ Tower down through Pilies Street to the Gates of Dawn. Highlights include the Vilnius Cathedral and bell tower, panoramic viewpoints from the castle hill and Three Crosses Hill, the artsy Užupis district, and the former KGB Museum (Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights) for a hard-hitting 20th-century perspective. The city is compact and walkable in the centre, with efficient buses and trolleybuses for longer hops, and Vilnius Airport (VNO) sits close to town for quick transfers.
