Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, with about 210,000 people in the city and over 540,000 in the wider Wellington Region. Set between steep green hills and a deep natural harbour at the southern tip of the North Island, it became New Zealand’s capital in 1865 because of its central position between the country’s main islands. The city is best known for its compact waterfront, strong café and craft beer culture, film industry links through Wētā Workshop, and a lively music and arts scene. Key sights include the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the Beehive and Parliament buildings, the Wellington Cable Car, the Botanic Garden, Cuba Street and the harbourfront walks. Getting in and around is straightforward via Wellington Airport, the main railway station, buses, local trains and ferries across Cook Strait to the South Island.
