WOLVERHAMPTON

Wolverhampton is a West Midlands city of about 264,000 people (2021), with origins as an Anglo-Saxon settlement associated with Lady Wulfrun, who secured a charter in 985 and gave the city its name. It grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution as a centre for metalworking, locks, japanning and engineering, and today it’s best known for its football culture (Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux), its Victorian-era streets and civic buildings, and a strong live-music and pub scene. Highlights include the Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the Grand Theatre, the Black Country heritage attractions nearby, and easy canalside walks that hint at the city’s industrial past. Getting in and around is straightforward via Wolverhampton station (fast links to Birmingham and London), the Midland Metro tram to central Birmingham, and quick motorway access on the M54/M6 corridor.
