Zlín is a city in southeastern Moravia, Czech Republic, with about 72,000 people, first mentioned in written records in 1322. It grew from a small craft and market town into one of Central Europe’s most distinctive modern industrial cities after the Baťa shoe company was founded here in 1894. Today Zlín is best known for its functionalist architecture, factory buildings, workers’ housing and “garden city” planning from the interwar period, much of it still giving the city a very recognisable red-brick-and-concrete look. Key sights include the Baťa Skyscraper / Building 21, the 14|15 Baťa Institute, the Tomáš Baťa Memorial, the city’s modernist districts and nearby Zlín Zoo at Lešná. Zlín also has a strong student and cultural scene through Tomáš Baťa University, plus film history connected to the Zlín Film Festival. Getting in and around is straightforward by rail and bus, with regional links to Otrokovice, Brno and Ostrava.
