Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city, with about 449,000 people in the city and around 1.6 million in the canton. Set where the Limmat River flows out of Lake Zurich, it has roots in the Roman customs post of Turicum and later grew into an important medieval trading city, Reformation centre and modern financial hub. Today Zurich is best known for banking, high quality of life, clean lakefront scenery and a compact old town that mixes guild houses, churches, cafés and shopping streets. Key sights include the Grossmünster, Fraumünster, Lindenhof, Bahnhofstrasse, Kunsthaus Zürich, the Swiss National Museum and the lake promenade, while neighbourhoods such as Langstrasse and Zürich-West add bars, venues and nightlife beyond the polished centre. Getting in and around is straightforward via Zurich Airport, Zürich Hauptbahnhof, trams, trains, buses and boats on the lake.
