BRNO

Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, with around 400,000 people, and the main city of Moravia. First mentioned in 1091, it grew into an important medieval and later industrial centre, and today it is known for universities, science, design, beer culture and a strong student-driven nightlife. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with key sights including Špilberk Castle, the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill, the underground tunnels and ossuary, and the UNESCO-listed Villa Tugendhat, one of Europe’s great modernist houses. Brno also works as a practical base for South Moravia, with trips to the Moravian Karst caves, vineyards and smaller historic towns nearby. Getting in and around is straightforward via Brno hlavní nádraží railway station, local trams and buses, and regional connections to Prague, Vienna and Bratislava.
