SaariHelvetti is a metal festival held on Viikinsaari island in Tampere, Finland. The festival has been arranged since 2015 and takes place in the middle of Lake Pyhäjärvi, with festivalgoers travelling to the island by boat from Laukontori harbour.
The name means roughly “Island Hell”, and the island setting is one of the festival’s defining features. SaariHelvetti combines heavy music with a green lakeside environment, giving it a different atmosphere from urban venues and field-based metal festivals. The programme focuses on Finnish and international metal, including melodic death metal, black metal, folk metal, industrial metal, death metal, doom, extreme metal and other heavy styles.
The festival has also included additional activities such as heavy karaoke, burlesque, dance performances, speed dating and meet-and-greet events. With its boat journey, island location and broad metal programme, SaariHelvetti is one of Finland’s more distinctive metal festivals outside the major city and field-festival formats.
