Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital and largest city, home to about 1.3 million people (around 40% of the country) and founded in 1724 as a Spanish fortified port on the Río de la Plata. It’s best known for its relaxed, coastal pace: the 20+ km Rambla waterfront connects beaches and neighbourhoods from the Old City to Pocitos and beyond, while the historic Ciudad Vieja anchors sights like Plaza Independencia, the Solís Theatre and the port-side Mercado del Puerto. Everyday Montevideo is also defined by mate culture, parrillas and football, with big stadium history at the Estadio Centenario. Getting in and around is straightforward via Carrasco International Airport (MVD), a walkable central core in the Old City, and buses that cover most neighbourhood hops along the coast.
