Coral Springs is a suburban city in Broward County, South Florida, with around 139,000 people. Unlike many cities in the region, it was deliberately planned from the beginning rather than growing from an older settlement. Coral Springs was incorporated in 1963 after Coral Ridge Properties began developing former farmland and cattle fields into a large residential community with carefully designed neighbourhoods, wide roads and extensive green space. The city lies immediately east of the Everglades and today has dozens of parks, sports facilities and walking areas, including access to the Sawgrass Trailhead on the edge of the wetlands. Coral Springs is primarily residential and has no traditional historic downtown, although a newer mixed-use centre has developed around the city’s municipal and cultural facilities. Its location in western Broward County also places it within easy reach of Fort Lauderdale, the Atlantic coast and the wider Miami metropolitan area.
