Edmonton is Alberta’s capital and northern gateway city, home to about 1.2 million people in the city and around 1.6 million in the metro area. It began as Fort Edmonton, a Hudson’s Bay Company fur-trading post on the North Saskatchewan River in 1795, became a city in 1904 and was named Alberta’s capital in 1905. Today it’s known for its vast river valley park system, winter culture, festivals, oil-and-gas economy, and West Edmonton Mall, once the largest shopping centre in the world. Key sights include the Alberta Legislature, Fort Edmonton Park, the Royal Alberta Museum, the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Whyte Avenue/Old Strathcona area for bars, venues and nightlife. Getting in and around is straightforward via Edmonton International Airport (YEG), the LRT and bus network, with road trips reaching Elk Island National Park, Jasper and the wider Canadian Rockies.
