Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, a Rhine-side city of about 225,000 people with roots in the Roman military settlement of Mogontiacum, founded around 13/12 BC. It is best known as the home of Johannes Gutenberg and the printing revolution, with the Gutenberg Museum and Mainz Cathedral anchoring the compact old town. The city also has a strong wine identity as a gateway to Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine-growing region, and a famous carnival tradition that fills the streets each year. Key sights include the Roman Theatre remains, the cathedral quarter, the Chagall windows in St Stephan’s Church, the riverside promenade and the half-timbered lanes around Kirschgarten. Getting in and around is straightforward via Mainz Hauptbahnhof, S-Bahn links to Frankfurt Airport and Wiesbaden, and easy rail access across the Rhine-Main region.
