Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, a Rhine-side city of about 225,000 people with roots in the Roman military settlement of Mogontiacum, founded around 13/12 BC. It is best known as the home of Johannes Gutenberg and the printing revolution, with the Gutenberg Museum and Mainz Cathedral anchoring the compact old town.
