Corfu Town is the capital of Corfu in the Ionian Islands, Greece, with about 23,500 people in the city and around 100,000 on the island. Its roots go back to ancient Korkyra, and the town later developed under Byzantine, Venetian, French and British rule, giving it a very different feel from many other Greek island capitals. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is the main draw, with narrow lanes, arcaded streets, pastel façades and two major fortresses guarding the harbour. Key sights include the Old Fortress, the New Fortress, the Liston, Spianada Square, the Church of Saint Spyridon and the Mon Repos estate south of the centre. Corfu Town is also the island’s transport hub, with the airport just outside the centre, ferries from the port to mainland Greece and Albania, and buses connecting the town with beaches and villages across the island.
