Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city of Utah, USA, with about 200,000 people in the city and more than 1.2 million in the wider metropolitan area. Founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young, it sits in the Salt Lake Valley between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. The city is best known for Temple Square and its links to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also for outdoor access, skiing, hiking and its role as a gateway to Utah’s national parks and mountain resorts. Key sights include the Utah State Capitol, the Natural History Museum of Utah, the Red Butte Garden, the Great Salt Lake shoreline and the downtown blocks around Main Street and Gallivan Center. Getting in and around is straightforward via Salt Lake City International Airport, the TRAX light rail, FrontRunner commuter rail and road links to Park City, the Wasatch canyons and the wider Intermountain West.
