Monterrey is the capital and largest city of Nuevo León, Mexico, with about 1.2 million people in the city and more than 5 million in the wider metropolitan area. Founded in 1596, it grew into one of northern Mexico’s main industrial, business and university centres, set in a dramatic mountain basin below the Cerro de la Silla. The city is best known for its modern skyline, strong norteño identity, carne asada culture and access to outdoor scenery, with key sights including the Macroplaza, Barrio Antiguo, Santa Lucía riverwalk, Fundidora Park and museums such as the Museum of Mexican History and Horno 3. Getting in and around is straightforward via Monterrey International Airport, long-distance buses, Metrorrey and road links across northern Mexico and toward the Texas border.
