Sidesporet Aarhus is a volunteer-run cultural space and small live music venue in Aarhus, Denmark. Located at the western end of the Godsbanen area, close to Ringgadebroen, it combines a bar, social meeting place, workshop spaces and a concert room known as Rottereden.
The venue is closely associated with Aarhus’ punk, alternative and underground communities. Punk and hardcore form a strong part of its identity, while metal, grindcore, crossover and other heavy underground styles also appear in the concert programme.
Sidesporet is connected to Foreningen for Midtbyens Subkulturer, usually abbreviated FMS. The organisation has roots in the local subcultural community that gathered around Mølleparken and later Folkets Park, before Sidesporet developed into a more permanent base. It has been at its present site on Thomas Koppels Gade since 2019.
The space is run through volunteer work and a self-managed structure. Practical and cultural decisions are handled through meetings, and the place is built around participation rather than ordinary venue management. The bar, events and activities help keep the project running.
Live music takes place in Rottereden, a small concert room used by local and touring underground bands. Concerts have covered punk, hardcore, death metal, grindcore, crossover and related styles, with bands such as Iron Fire, Lost Dawning, Hellmaze, In Satan’s Paradise, Seizing Blackwater, Lemlæstet, Afdød, Fatal Image, Advocacy, Apathist and GRAT appearing at the venue.
Sidesporet’s programme also extends beyond concerts. Communal meals, creative workshops, board-game events, markets, karaoke, open-house evenings and other social activities are part of the wider use of the place. Many events are free or donation-based, with money going back into the maintenance and operation of the space.
The house rules are direct: no violence, no discrimination and no hard drugs. Together with the DIY structure, cheap bar, workshop culture and underground concerts, this gives Sidesporet a role somewhere between punk venue, social refuge and subcultural meeting place.
