ROCK & RUL

Rock & Rul is a non-profit rock and metal festival in Aarhus, Denmark. Founded in 2024, it was created with accessibility as a central part of the festival rather than as a separate add-on.

The festival was started by Sebastian Berke and Andreas Truelsen after experiences at other music festivals showed how many practical barriers still exist for people with disabilities. Rock & Rul was built around a different idea: a heavy music festival where access, movement, rest areas and viewing options are considered from the beginning.

Musically, Rock & Rul is centred on rock and metal, but the programme is broad within heavy and alternative music. Death metal, black metal, thrash, hardcore, punk, progressive music, folk metal, sludge, grindcore and more experimental styles have all been part of the festival.

The first edition took place on 14 September 2024 at Godsbanen and Radar in Aarhus. More than twenty mainly Danish artists performed, including I’ll Be Damned, Plaguemace, Baench, Terrorpy, Mite, Speedslut, Situationsfornærmelse, Quantum Solaris, Slovgh and Rap Martin Rap.

All bands at the first Rock & Rul performed without a fee, allowing the organisers to direct proceeds towards accessibility work. The event attracted more than 600 people and helped establish Rock & Rul as an independent festival project.

In 2025, the Aarhus edition moved to Train. The line-up included Terminalist, Inhuman Nature, Jakobe, Rottefænger and Wolfhead, continuing the festival’s mixture of metal, hardcore, punk and other heavy music. A separate Copenhagen event followed at Copenhagen Distillery later the same year.

Rock & Rul expanded again in 2026, becoming a two-day outdoor festival at Volume Village beneath Ringgadebroen in Aarhus. The site used two outdoor stages and a larger festival layout while keeping accessibility at the centre of the production.

The 2026 line-up brought the festival further into the international metal circuit. Bands included Grave, Morbid, Mantar, Midnight, Party Cannon, Afsky, Cryptosis, Cryptic Shift, Dagger Threat, Danefae, Trold and Rektum, alongside other Danish and international acts.

Accessibility measures at Rock & Rul have included step-free access, surfaces suitable for wheelchairs, accessible toilets, rest areas and raised viewing platforms. The aim is not to place disabled guests in a separate section, but to make the whole festival site easier to use for people with different physical and sensory needs.
