THE BODY SHOP

The Body Shop is a strip club at 8250 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, and one of the surviving establishments from the era when the Sunset Strip became closely associated with Los Angeles hard rock and glam metal. The site was already operating as a burlesque club in the 1940s, while the Body Shop developed into an all-nude club during the following decades. It became a familiar part of Sunset Boulevard nightlife and was particularly closely associated with the rock scene of the 1980s.

The Body Shop was used by Mötley Crüe and their song “Girls, Girls, Girls” (1987). The Body Shop is named directly in the song and also appears in its famous music video. The opening motorcycle sequence shows the band arriving outside the club, with its distinctive exterior and large “Girls Girls Girls” signage visible before the video moves on to the indoor strip-club scenes. Although Mötley Crüe originally wanted to shoot the main club sequences at the Body Shop, its all-nude format meant it could not serve alcohol, so the interior filming was instead carried out at Seventh Veil farther east on Sunset Boulevard.

The connection continued beyond the video. Elektra Records held the official listening party for the “Girls, Girls, Girls” album at the Body Shop on 14 May 1987, the day before the album was released, with dancers performing to the record during the event. Contemporary music-industry accounts specifically identify the club as the location of the party.

A major fire damaged the Body Shop in December 2008, particularly the roof and upper parts of the building, but the club subsequently reopened and continues to operate at the same Sunset Boulevard address.
