EXCALIBUR METAL PUB

Excalibur Metal Pub is a heavy metal and hard rock bar at Carrer de Cartago 14 in the S’Arenal area of Playa de Palma, Mallorca, Spain. Established around 1993 by three Germans, the pub has been part of Mallorca’s metal scene for more than three decades. Javi, who later became one of its owners, initially helped the founders select music at weekends before taking a full-time position behind the bar. Freya joined the staff approximately nine years later, and the couple eventually purchased the business together.

The pub occupies a basement with a dark interior decorated with traditional heavy metal imagery and medieval elements, including swords and shields reflecting the Excalibur name. Games include pool, table football, darts and a boxing arcade machine, while the bar also sells its own merchandise. The music covers classic heavy metal, hard rock, thrash, death and folk metal, with customers welcome to request songs. Over the years, musicians from Kreator and HammerFall have visited Excalibur, along with former Barón Rojo vocalist José Luis Campuzano, better known as Sherpa.

Excalibur also has a notable connection with Motörhead. In October 2015, the pub served as the principal filming location for the band’s music video “When the Sky Comes Looking for You”, taken from their final studio album, “Bad Magic”. The video was directed by Mallorcan photographer Pep Bonet, who had worked extensively with Motörhead since 2008.

The story follows a mysterious biker representing death who arrives at Excalibur and becomes involved in a violent card game with the pub’s customers. Around 50 extras participated in the filming, including owner Javi, who appears on screen receiving a genuine Motörhead War Pig tattoo from Barcelona tattoo artist Javi Castaño. Much of the action takes place inside the pub, making its interior instantly recognisable throughout the video.

“When the Sky Comes Looking for You” premiered on 16 December 2015, just twelve days before Lemmy Kilmister died on 28 December. It was consequently one of the final official Motörhead music videos released during his lifetime. Although the band members were not personally present for the Mallorca shoot, Excalibur features prominently in the finished production. Footage of Javi from the filming was subsequently reused in Airbourne’s “It’s All for Rock ‘n’ Roll” (2017), a tribute to Lemmy.

Excalibur continues to operate in S’Arenal, approximately 15 kilometres from central Palma, retaining the heavy metal identity established in the early 1990s. Its appearance in one of Motörhead’s final music videos also gives the small basement pub a direct connection to the band’s history.
