STATIC SHOCK MUSIK

Static Shock Musik is an independent record shop at Bürknerstraße 6 in the Neukölln district of Berlin, Germany. Founded around 2009 by Christian Iffland, the shop has a strong underground profile centred on punk, hardcore and metal. Iffland had worked in several Berlin record shops after moving to the city in 2000 before establishing Static Shock as his own specialist store.

The relatively small shop carries several thousand titles, including new and second-hand LPs, 7-inches and cassettes. Punk and hardcore form a large part of the stock, alongside a substantial metal section, garage rock, independent music and smaller selections of krautrock, jazz and other less conventional material. Rare pressings and obscure underground releases are an important part of the selection, while band shirts are among the few non-music items sold.

Cassettes remain particularly well represented. Iffland is an enthusiast of the format, which has continued to play an important role within punk, hardcore and metal underground scenes, with new releases regularly arriving from independent labels in Europe and North America.

Static Shock is closely connected with Berlin’s DIY music community. Iffland has played in the post-punk band Diät and has organised underground concerts in the city, while the shop has become a place where information about local shows, bands and new releases circulates within the scene.

Shortly after opening Static Shock, Iffland also founded Static Age Musik, an independent label releasing new material alongside reissues of obscure punk recordings, including early Swiss punk singles. More than fifteen years after opening, Static Shock Musik remains active at its original Bürknerstraße address and retains the underground focus established during its early years.
