ROCK STEADY RECORDS

Rock Steady Records is an independent record shop at Sesenheimer Straße 15 in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin, Germany. The business has existed for around three decades and is currently run by Björn Kulp, who took over from longtime operators Bernd and Thomas when they retired. Kulp had wanted to run a record shop since his teens and chose to continue the established Rock Steady business when the opportunity arose.

The shop has moved several times during its history. For many years it was based around Nollendorfplatz, including premises on Motzstraße, before relocating to Charlottenburg and spending a period on Zillestraße. Rock Steady is now located on Sesenheimer Straße, close to Wilmersdorfer Straße.

The shop carries around 15,000 records and several thousand CDs, combining new and second-hand material with fresh collections arriving frequently. The selection covers rock, pop and numerous other genres, with hard rock and heavy metal well represented throughout the stock.

Kulp is himself closely familiar with heavier rock. His own musical favourites include bands such as KISS, Judas Priest and UFO, reflecting part of the shop’s continued interest in classic hard rock and metal alongside its broader catalogue.

The interior has the traditional character of a densely stocked independent record shop, with rows of tightly packed racks filling much of the available space. One of the more unusual details is a Swarovski chandelier hanging inside the shop, which Kulp has jokingly referred to as its greatest treasure.

Rock Steady also buys used record collections directly from customers and operates an online catalogue alongside the physical shop.
