Drachselsried is a small municipality in Bavaria, southern Germany, with around 2,400 people. Located in the Zellertal valley within the Bavarian Forest, it was first mentioned in the 12th century as Draehselesried and became an independent municipality in 1818. For centuries the surrounding area was shaped by agriculture, forestry and glassmaking, with the Poschinger family helping establish the local glass industry. Today roughly three quarters of the municipality is covered by forest, much of it within the Bavarian Forest Nature Park. Drachselsried lies beneath the mountain ridge leading towards Großer Arber, the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest, making hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities central to local tourism. The area remains strongly connected to glass art, including the Glasgalerie Herrmann, which displays work by artists from around the world.
