Bogotá is the capital and largest city of Colombia, with almost 8 million people in the capital district. Founded in 1538 on the high Andean plateau of the Sabana de Bogotá, it sits around 2,640 metres above sea level and works as the country’s main political, cultural and transport hub. The city is best known for its historic La Candelaria district, mountain views from Monserrate, major museums such as the Gold Museum and Museo Botero, and a dense mix of neighbourhoods ranging from colonial streets to modern business and nightlife areas. Key sights include Plaza de Bolívar, the cathedral, Monserrate, the National Museum, the Gold Museum, Usaquén and the restaurant and bar districts around Chapinero and Zona T. Getting in and around is straightforward via El Dorado International Airport, TransMilenio buses, taxis and ride-hailing, though traffic is heavy and the city is usually best explored by area rather than trying to cross it too often in one day.
