SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa has the most developed heavy metal scene on the African continent, with roots dating back to the early 1980s. One of the country’s earliest and most influential bands was Voice of Destruction, formed in Cape Town in 1986, often cited as pioneers of South African extreme metal. Around the same time, Ragnärok and Odyssey helped build a small but determined local heavy scene.

In the 1990s, South Africa produced notable death and grindcore acts such as Groinchurn, who gained international recognition in the underground for their relentless grind/death style. The local scene also diversified, with bands like Pothole pushing thrash and groove influences.

The 2000s and 2010s saw a new wave of South African metal. Terminatryx blended industrial, gothic, and metal aesthetics, while Wildernessking drew attention abroad with their atmospheric black metal. Bands such as The Fallen Prophets (death metal) and Boargazm (groove/death) further represent the country’s modern output.

South Africa also built a festival culture. Metal4Africa in Stellenbosch has become a cornerstone of the community since 2006, while events like Witchfest brought international names such as Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, and Hatebreed to South African audiences. Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Pretoria serve as the main hubs for the live scene.
