Effenaar is a live music venue in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Located on Dommelstraat in the city centre, it has been active since 1971 and has developed from an alternative youth centre into one of the Netherlands’ larger music venues.

The venue began in a former linen factory under the name Open Jongerencentrum Para+. Later in 1971 it was renamed Effenaar, after a machine used for smoothing or finishing linen and other fabrics, linking the name to the industrial past of the building.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Effenaar became an important stage for alternative music in Eindhoven. Its programme moved from countercultural and hippie-influenced activity towards a stronger focus on live music, with international artists such as John Cale, Talking Heads, Ramones, Joe Jackson and Sex Pistols appearing at the venue.

The original industrial building was replaced in 2005 by a purpose-built music complex designed by the Rotterdam architectural practice MVRDV. The current venue has two concert halls: the Grote Zaal, with a capacity of around 1,200 people, and the Kleine Zaal, with a capacity of around 350. It also includes a café-restaurant and other event spaces.

Metal has been part of Effenaar’s history for decades. The venue hosted Aardschokdag in 1982, one of the early major metal events in Eindhoven. The festival returned to the city in 1986 with bands such as King Diamond, Helloween, Laaz Rockit and Agent Steel.

Since 2009, Effenaar has also been the home of Eindhoven Metal Meeting, which developed from the former Arnhem Metal Meeting. The first Eindhoven edition featured bands such as Nile, Satyricon, Entombed and The Devil’s Blood, and the festival later grew into a multi-day event focused mainly on death metal, black metal, thrash metal and doom metal.

Effenaar’s regular programme remains broad, covering rock, metal, punk, pop, hip-hop, electronic music and other genres. Its long alternative history, two concert halls and recurring metal festivals give it a central place in Eindhoven’s live music scene.
