LYON

Lyon is France’s third-largest city proper, with 520,774 residents (2022) and about 2.33 million across the wider metropolitan area, founded in 43 BC as the Roman city of Lugdunum at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône. It’s best known for its UNESCO-listed historic districts (Vieux Lyon, Fourvière, the Croix-Rousse slopes and much of the Presqu’île), its silk-weaving heritage, and its food culture of traditional bouchons. Highlights include the Roman theatres and views from Fourvière, Renaissance lanes and traboules in Vieux Lyon, the big squares of the Presqu’île between the rivers, and modern stops like the Musée des Confluences; getting in is straightforward via Lyon Part-Dieu/ Perrache rail hubs and Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS), around 20 km southeast of the centre.
