MARGAM CASTLE

Margam Castle is a 19th-century Tudor-Gothic mansion within Margam Country Park near Port Talbot, designed by architect Thomas Hopper for Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot and built circa 1830–1840. A Grade I-listed landmark, it stands amid historic gardens, an impressive orangery, and the ruins of Margam Abbey, making it as much a heritage landscape as a house. The park operates with set opening hours and paid parking, while interior access to the castle varies by season and event. Margam is also famed for its ghost lore—most notably tales of a former gamekeeper said to haunt the grounds—adding a darker note to its grand Victorian silhouette.

Iron Maiden’s 1992 Fear of the Dark album features inside-cover photos taken at two different locations: Carreg Cennen Castle and Margam Castle. At Margam, photos were shot both outside and on the castle’s grand staircase, including a booklet image of Steve Harris on the stairs. The back cover shows the band from above on the staircase, and two near-identical versions of this photo exist—one framed slightly more to the right than the other.
