PHILIPPINES

Heavy metal in the Philippines started shaping its identity in the Philippines in the 1980s, evolving from roots in Pinoy rock where iconic groups like Juan de la Cruz Band and Maria Cafra paved the way for louder genres. The underground metal scene took off in the late 1980s and 1990s with bands such as SkyChurch, known for crossover thrash, and Pathogen, Omenfilth, Mass Hypnosia, and Deiphago, who excelled in live performances and underground recordings.

By the 2000s and 2010s, bands like Slapshock, Greyhoundz, Wolfgang, and Lokomotiv achieved mainstream heavy metal and alternative success. At the same time, underground acts including Rust Phantom, Religious Nightmare, and Loss of Control carried the extreme scene forward.

Live culture plays a major role in sustaining the scene—Pulp Summer Slam is the country’s premier metal festival, repeatedly bringing global heavy acts to Philippine audiences.
