SINGAPORE

Singapore’s heavy metal scene began to develop in the 1980s, influenced by the global rise of thrash and heavy metal. Early bands like Rusty Blade (founded 1981) played a mix of hard rock and heavy metal and are often credited as pioneers of Singapore’s heavy music.

By the late 1980s and early 1990s, a strong underground extreme metal scene had formed. Stomping Ground became known for their hardcore/metal crossover, while death and black metal acts such as Abhorer and Impiety pushed Singapore onto the international extreme metal map. Impiety, formed in 1990, remains the country’s most famous metal export, touring worldwide and known for their aggressive blackened death metal.

The 2000s brought further diversity, with bands like Oshiego (death metal) and Wormrot (grindcore, though more in the punk/metal crossover) earning international acclaim. Singapore’s small size and strict laws made it difficult for heavy music to grow openly, but the scene thrived underground in clubs and rehearsal spaces.
