Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico, USA, with about 565,000 people in the city and more than 920,000 in the metro area. Founded as a Spanish colonial villa in 1706, it sits in the high desert along the Rio Grande, with the Sandia Mountains rising sharply to the east. The city is best known for its Pueblo, Hispanic and Route 66 heritage, New Mexican food, desert landscapes and the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Key sights include Old Town, the Sandia Peak Tramway, Petroglyph National Monument, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the museums around the historic centre. Getting in and around is straightforward via Albuquerque International Sunport, Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, local buses and major road links on I-25 and I-40, with Santa Fe, Acoma Pueblo and the surrounding desert scenery within day-trip range.
