ARGENTINA

Argentina’s heavy metal roots stretch back to the late 1970s, emerging alongside the country’s turbulent political climate. The scene truly began to flourish in the early 1980s after the end of the military dictatorship, when rock and metal could once again be played freely. Bands like Riff are often credited as the pioneers of Argentine heavy metal, combining hard rock energy with socially aware lyrics.

The late 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of Hermética, arguably the most influential metal band in Argentina’s history. Known for their aggressive thrash sound and politically charged lyrics in Spanish, Hermética became a voice for the working class. After their breakup in 1994, members went on to form Malón, continuing the thrash legacy. Other notable acts like V8 and Logos further shaped the country’s metal identity.

Argentina’s fans are some of the most intense in the world — so much so that many international bands rank Buenos Aires among their favourite tour stops. Iconic performances by Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Metallica in Argentina are remembered for deafening singalongs, relentless moshing, and an atmosphere that feels like a football stadium.

Today, Argentina’s scene remains vibrant, with festivals like Metal para Todos showcasing both international stars and a diverse domestic scene spanning thrash, power, death, and folk metal.
