Armilla is a municipality immediately south of Granada in Andalusia, Spain, with around 25,000 people. Although now effectively part of the continuous Granada metropolitan area, Armilla has a much older history and existed as a settlement before the Roman period. It developed particularly under Muslim rule, when it was known as Armillat al-Aflum and prospered through irrigated agriculture and the silk trade within the Kingdom of Granada. The town was largely depopulated following the Christian conquest and later conflicts, before being resettled from the late 16th century. Today Armilla is a densely built suburb only about five kilometres from central Granada and is directly connected to the city by the Granada Metro. Its main historic attraction is the 18th-century Casa García de Viedma, now home to the local ethnographic museum, while the municipality also contains major commercial and exhibition areas serving the wider Granada region. Its location makes Armilla particularly practical for reaching Granada while remaining outside the historic city centre.
