BANCA DO ROCK

Banca do Rock is an independent rock and heavy metal merchandise store at Rua Conceição 289 in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. The business was established in 2005 by Renato Souza, who had collected rock albums since the age of 13 and eventually left his law studies to open a music shop of his own.

It began as a small stall in central Campinas, close to vendors selling pirated CDs and DVDs. Souza noticed that relatively little of the surrounding merchandise was aimed specifically at rock fans and decided to specialise in the genre. The name Banca do Rock simply means “Rock Stall”, reflecting the modest form in which the business started.

The original selection included CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, band T-shirts, posters, accessories and various music-related collectibles. Over time, clothing became increasingly important, and band shirts now form a major part of the catalogue. The selection covers classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, thrash metal and other related styles, with bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Testament, W.A.S.P., Cradle of Filth and Accept represented.

Punk, alternative rock and Brazilian rock are also part of the range, alongside a smaller selection connected with blues, jazz and other genres. Banca do Rock has also developed its own clothing designs, including shirts produced specifically for women and children.

The business has maintained connections with the Campinas music community beyond retail. In 2014, Banca do Rock began offering music lessons after Souza noticed that customers regularly asked for recommendations for local teachers. Musician Richard Küll became involved in the programme, teaching guitar, drums, keyboards and piano.

Banca do Rock has also worked with local rock venues and concert travel organisers. After moving from its original stall into larger premises, the business continued to develop while retaining the specialist rock identity established in 2005.
