Black Cat Tavern is a bar, restaurant and live music venue in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Located on Broadway Avenue, it opened under its present name in March 2018 after replacing the long-running Vangelis Tavern at the same address.
The change from Vangelis to Black Cat Tavern was carried out by owners Jodie Uliski and Greg Figg, who had already developed Vangelis into an eclectic live venue. Vangelis held its final event on 25 March 2018, before Black Cat Tavern launched on 30 March with Dayglo Abortions, Good Enough and Zelda BellaDonna and the Deadly Nightshades.
Black Cat Tavern combines live music with its food and bar operation under the Black Cat Pizza name. The venue has a small stage at one end of the tavern, rather than a separate concert hall, giving shows a close and informal bar-room atmosphere.
The programme crosses several genres, with punk, metal, hardcore, rock, hip-hop, electronic, folk and experimental music all appearing on the calendar. Metal and hardcore have formed a strong part of the venue’s live activity, with bands such as Ingested, Spectral Wound, Mizmor, Napalm Death, Kataklysm, Six Feet Under, Wormhole and Iron Kingdom playing Black Cat Tavern.
The venue also hosts non-concert events such as Punk Rock Bingo, trivia, comedy, record nights, game nights and open-stage events. Pool, ping-pong, pinball machines and a VLT room have also formed part of the premises, making Black Cat Tavern as much a neighbourhood hangout as a live music room.
The exterior is easily recognised by the large black cat head mounted above the entrance. With its pizza, games, small stage, broad underground booking and roots in the former Vangelis Tavern, Black Cat Tavern has become one of Saskatoon’s key independent venues for punk, metal and alternative music.
