BRASOV

Brașov is a historic Transylvanian city in central Romania with around 240,000–250,000 people, set in a mountain basin at the foot of the Carpathians. Founded by Saxon settlers in the medieval period and first documented in the 13th century, it became an important fortified trading town between Central Europe, Wallachia and Moldova. The compact old town is one of Romania’s most atmospheric, centred on Council Square (Piața Sfatului), the Gothic Black Church, old merchant houses and surviving medieval gates and walls. Above the rooftops, Mount Tâmpa gives the city its dramatic backdrop and easy viewpoint hikes or cable-car rides. Brașov is also a practical base for some of Romania’s best-known sights, including Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress and the mountain resort of Poiana Brașov. Getting in and around is straightforward by rail and road from Bucharest, with local buses covering the city and nearby mountain areas.
