CANADA

Canada has a long and diverse heavy metal history, producing influential bands across nearly every subgenre. The scene began developing in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with early acts like Anvil, whose speed and traditional heavy metal sound would influence thrash pioneers such as Metallica and Slayer. Another formative name from the same period is Exciter, one of the first bands to define the speed metal style, debuting with Heavy Metal Maniac in 1983.

In the thrash scene, bands like Sacrifice, Razor, and Voivod left a lasting mark. Voivod, from Quebec, became one of the most innovative bands in metal history, evolving from raw thrash into a progressive and experimental sound that inspired countless artists.

Canada also has a strong presence in death and technical death metal, with groups such as Gorguts, pioneers of avant-garde death metal, and Cryptopsy, known for redefining technical brutality in the 1990s. The country’s black metal scene has grown steadily, producing internationally recognised acts like Blasphemy.

Power and traditional metal also thrive, represented by bands like Skull Fist, Cauldron, and Striker, who have helped keep classic heavy metal alive in the modern era. Canada’s metalcore and modern metal presence is also notable, with Kataklysm and The Agonist gaining international acclaim.

Major Canadian metal festivals include Heavy Montréal, which attracts some of the world’s biggest acts, and numerous regional gatherings that highlight both established and underground talent.
