TORONTO

Toronto is Canada’s largest city, a Lake Ontario metropolis of around 3 million people in the city proper and more than 7 million in the wider metropolitan area. First established as the town of York in 1793 and incorporated as Toronto in 1834, it is best known for its multicultural neighbourhoods, skyline and major cultural institutions. Classic sights include the CN Tower, the harbourfront and Toronto Islands, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Distillery District, while neighbourhoods such as Kensington Market, Queen West, The Annex and Parkdale add bars, venues, record shops, food and street life. The city also has a strong music history, from Rush and Triumph to a long-running punk, hardcore and metal underground. Getting in and around is straightforward via Toronto Pearson International Airport, Union Station, the subway and streetcar network, with Niagara Falls an easy day trip from the city.
