Czechia’s heavy metal scene has deep roots in the country’s turbulent political history. Under communist rule, rock and metal were often seen as rebellious Western imports, and censorship forced fans and musicians to operate in the underground. Despite this, the 1980s gave rise to influential bands such as Arakain, who became pioneers of Czech heavy metal by blending traditional metal with thrash influences. Their early work, often performed at semi-legal concerts, inspired a generation.
Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the floodgates opened for metal in Czechia. International acts could finally tour the country, and local bands could release their music more freely. The 1990s saw the rise of death and black metal groups like Root, whose occult-inspired style and theatrical stage presence gained a cult following worldwide, and Krabathor, one of the first Czech death metal bands to achieve international recognition.
In later years, the scene diversified, producing power metal acts such as Sebastian and gothic/doom outfits like Silent Stream of Godless Elegy, who infused Moravian folk elements into their sound. The festival culture also exploded, with Brutal Assault becoming one of Europe’s most respected extreme metal festivals, drawing fans from across the globe to the historic Josefov Fortress.
