Ostrava is the third-largest city in the Czech Republic, with just under 300,000 people including foreign residents, set in the Moravian-Silesian Region close to the Polish border. First mentioned in the 13th century, it grew from a border and trading settlement into one of Central Europe’s major coal, iron and steel centres, earning nicknames such as the “steel heart of the republic.” Today Ostrava is best known for its industrial heritage, especially the Lower Vítkovice area, Landek Park mining museum and the Bolt Tower, but the city also has a strong cultural and nightlife side around Stodolní Street, the city centre and former factory districts. Key sights include the New City Hall viewing tower, Silesian Ostrava Castle, Masaryk Square, the Ostrava Zoo and the converted industrial spaces used for concerts, festivals and exhibitions. Getting in and around is straightforward via Ostrava hlavní nádraží, Leoš Janáček Airport Ostrava, trams, buses and regional rail links to Prague, Brno, Katowice and Kraków.
