Elverum is a small city in Innlandet, Norway, with about 22,000 people in the municipality, set on the Glomma river at the meeting point between Østerdalen and Solør. The area has older rural and trading roots, while Elverum gained city status in 1996 and today works as a regional centre for education, military history, forestry and inland culture. Key sights include the Norwegian Forest Museum, Glomdalsmuseet, Elverum Church, the riverside areas around Leiret and Vestad, and easy access to forests, lakes and outdoor routes in the surrounding countryside. Elverum is also known for its Second World War history, including its role in the dramatic events of April 1940. Getting in and around is straightforward by road and bus, with links to Hamar, Oslo and Trysil, and the town centre is compact enough to cover on foot.
