FOLKSTONE

Folkestone is a Kent coastal town of about 47,000 people, set on the English Channel between the North Downs and the sea. It has older roots stretching back to early medieval Kent, but grew especially in the 19th century as a harbour town, cross-Channel port and fashionable seaside resort. Today it is best known for its seafront, the restored Harbour Arm, the Creative Quarter’s steep old streets of galleries, cafés and independent shops, and the cliff-top Leas promenade. Key sights include the harbour area, Sunny Sands beach, the Lower Leas Coastal Park and views across the Channel towards France on clear days. Folkestone also works as a practical gateway town, with rail links to London, road access via the M20, and the Channel Tunnel terminal nearby at Cheriton.
