Granada is a historic city in Andalusia, Spain, with about 234,000 people, set below the Sierra Nevada where the Darro and Genil rivers meet. Its roots go back to antiquity, but the city is best known for its centuries as the last Muslim-ruled capital in Spain, ending with the Catholic Monarchs’ conquest in 1492. The great landmark is the Alhambra and Generalife, the palace-and-fortress complex above the city, while the Albaicín quarter forms part of the same UNESCO World Heritage setting. Key sights include Granada Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, Sacromonte’s cave houses and flamenco tradition, the narrow lanes of the old centre and the viewpoints around San Nicolás. Granada is also a lively university city with tapas bars, cafés and venues spread through the centre, Realejo and Albaicín. Getting in and around is straightforward via Granada railway station, Federico García Lorca Granada Airport, buses and walkable central districts, with easy trips to the Sierra Nevada and the Costa Tropical.
