Growl Records is an independent record shop and small live music venue at 509 E Abram Street in downtown Arlington, Texas. Opened in 2017, the shop grew out of a partnership between Division Brewing founder Wade Wadlington and David Waits, who had known each other since college. The premises had previously housed Cosmic Crow Collective, where live performances were already part of the activity.
The shop specialises in new and used vinyl alongside CDs, cassettes, shirts, posters and other music-related items. Its selection covers a broad range of genres, with a strong representation of punk, hard rock, alternative and underground music, including releases by bands from Arlington and the wider Dallas–Fort Worth area. Live music was part of Growl from the beginning, with bands performing both inside the shop and in the adjoining outdoor area.
Punk, hardcore and metal have become particularly prominent in the concert programme. Shows range from local bills to touring underground bands, while events such as Texas Grindfest have brought grindcore and extreme metal to the small venue. Arlington death metal band Frozen Soul also has close ties to the complex. In 2021, the band collaborated with neighbouring Division Brewing on a beer celebrating their signing to Century Media Records. The brewery and record shop are closely connected, and drinks from Division Brewing can be brought into Growl during concerts.
Growl Records has gained recognition for both sides of its operation. Dallas Observer named it Best One-Stop Record Shop in 2024 and Best Place to See Hardcore Heavy Metal in 2025. Its combination of record shop, intimate live shows and close connection with Division Brewing has made Growl an established part of Arlington’s underground music scene.
