HULEN

Hulen is a student-run rock club and live music venue in Bergen, Norway. Located on Møhlenpris, the venue is built inside a former civil defence shelter beneath Nygårdshøyden, giving it a distinctive underground cave atmosphere.

The venue opened on 17 May 1969, after the old mountain shelter was no longer useful for military or civil defence purposes. It was turned into a concert venue and has since become one of Bergen’s most recognisable music spaces, often described as one of Northern Europe’s oldest rock clubs. Hulen has been run by volunteers for most of its history, with students and music enthusiasts forming the core of the organisation.

Hulen’s programme covers rock, punk, indie, heavy metal, hip hop, jazz, electronic music, club nights and DJ events. With a capacity of around 320 people, it is a compact and intimate venue shaped by its cave-like interior and long volunteer tradition.

The venue has also been used for heavy music events connected to Bergen’s metal scene, including collaborations with Beyond the Gates and Wacken Metal Battle Norway. Its history, underground setting and continued use for rock and metal concerts give Hulen a strong place in Bergen’s live music culture.
