Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city, with about 295,000 people in the municipality, set on the west coast between fjords, mountains and the North Sea. Founded by King Olav Kyrre in 1070, it became Norway’s capital in the Middle Ages and later one of Northern Europe’s most important trading ports, especially through the Hanseatic merchants at Bryggen. Today the city is best known for its UNESCO-listed wharf, steep mountainsides, rainy weather, seafood, student life and strong music culture. Key sights include Bryggen, the Fish Market, Bergenhus Fortress, Fløibanen to Mount Fløyen, Ulriken, the old wooden streets of Nordnes and Sandviken, and the museums tied to Edvard Grieg and Bergen’s maritime history. Bergen also works as a classic gateway to the fjords, with boat trips, mountain hikes and coastal routes starting close to the centre. Getting in and around is straightforward via Bergen Airport Flesland, Bergen railway station, the Bybanen light rail, buses and ferries, with the compact centre easy to explore on foot.
