JAPAN

Japan’s heavy metal scene began to emerge in the late 1970s, heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and American hard rock. One of the earliest and most important pioneers was Bow Wow, later known internationally as Vow Wow. However, the real breakthrough came in the early 1980s with Loudness, whose technical skill and international success made them Japan’s most famous heavy metal export.

Another key early act was Earthshaker, who brought a melodic style inspired by Rainbow and Deep Purple, while bands like Anthem and X Japan pushed the genre in different directions — Anthem with traditional heavy metal, and X Japan with a fusion of power metal, speed metal, and symphonic elements.

Japan developed a strong extreme metal underground in the 1990s, with death metal acts like Defiled and Intestine Baalism, and black metal bands such as Sabbat and Gallhammer gaining cult status internationally. The technical prowess and unique creativity of Japanese musicians have made the scene stand out globally.

Festivals like Loud Park and Knotfest Japan attract major international acts while also highlighting homegrown talent.
