Tokyo is Japan’s capital and largest city, with about 14.2 million people in the Tokyo Metropolis and over 37 million in the wider Greater Tokyo area. Originally known as Edo, it grew from a castle town into the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603, before becoming the imperial capital and being renamed Tokyo in 1868. Today it is best known for its scale, dense rail network, neon districts, temples, shopping streets and constant contrast between old and new. Key areas include Shinjuku for nightlife and skyscrapers, Shibuya for youth culture and crossings, Asakusa for Sensō-ji and older Tokyo atmosphere, Akihabara for electronics and pop culture, and Harajuku/Omotesandō for fashion. Museums, parks and shrines are spread across the city, from Ueno and Meiji Shrine to the Imperial Palace area. Getting in and around is straightforward via Haneda and Narita airports, the Shinkansen at Tokyo and Shinagawa stations, and the JR, Metro and Toei networks that cover almost every part of the city.
