Joey Ramone (born Jeffrey Ross Hyman; 19 May 1951 – 15 April 2001) was an American musician and the lead vocalist of Ramones, a band that helped pioneer punk rock. With his distinctive voice, stage presence, and image, Joey became one of the most recognisable frontmen of the original punk era and remained closely identified with the band throughout its career.
Joey Ramone died in New York City on 15 April 2001, aged 49, after a battle with lymphoma. News of his death prompted tributes across the punk and rock world, and a public memorial service was held in New York, attended by friends, fans, and figures from the music community. He is buried at New Mount Zion Cemetery in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, where his grave has become a place of pilgrimage for Ramones fans and visitors interested in punk history.
While Joey’s grave is in New Jersey, several other Ramones-related memorial sites are found in the Los Angeles area, including Johnny Ramone’s cenotaph at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and Dee Dee Ramone’s grave at the same cemetery.
