KOPERVIK

Kopervik is a small coastal town on the island of Karmøy in Rogaland, Norway, with around 12,000 people. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in Karmøy municipality, occupying a sheltered harbour on the Karmsundet strait. A small settlement developed here during the 18th century, before Kopervik expanded rapidly during the rich herring fisheries of the 19th century and became an important harbour, trading centre and fish-salting port. It was granted ladested status in 1866 and remained an independent municipality until 1965, when it became part of the new Karmøy municipality; Kopervik regained city status by municipal decision in 1996. Fishing, shipping and maritime industry remain important to the area, while the harbour and compact centre retain much of the town’s coastal character. Kopervik also provides a convenient base for exploring Karmøy, including the Viking heritage at nearby Avaldsnes, the beaches of the island’s western coast and the historic town of Skudeneshavn farther south.
