NEWCASTLE

Newcastle upon Tyne is a major city in Tyne and Wear, England, with about 300,000 people in the city proper and a much larger urban area shared with Gateshead and the wider Tyneside region. Its roots go back to the Roman fort of Pons Aelius on Hadrian’s Wall, while the modern name comes from the “new castle” built by the Normans in the 11th century. The city later grew into one of northern England’s great industrial centres, shaped by coal, shipbuilding, engineering and trade on the River Tyne. Today Newcastle is known for its nightlife, strong music and pub culture, Newcastle United at St James’ Park, and its distinctive riverside bridges, including the Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Key sights include the Castle Keep, Newcastle Cathedral, Grainger Town, Grey Street, the Quayside, the BALTIC and Sage Gateshead across the river, and easy day trips to the Northumberland coast and Hadrian’s Wall country. Getting in and around is straightforward via Newcastle Central Station, Newcastle International Airport and the Tyne and Wear Metro.
