Nicosia is the capital and largest city of Cyprus, with around 256,000 people in the urban area and a history that reaches back to the ancient city-kingdom of Ledra. Set inland on the Mesaoria plain, it is best known as Europe’s last divided capital, with the UN buffer zone cutting through the old city between the Republic of Cyprus side and Turkish-controlled North Nicosia. The historic core is enclosed by 16th-century Venetian walls, with key sights including the Cyprus Museum, Ledra Street crossing, Famagusta Gate, Selimiye Mosque/former Cathedral of Saint Sophia, and the narrow lanes of Laiki Geitonia. Beyond the old town, Nicosia is Cyprus’s main administrative, business and cultural centre, with museums, cafés, shops and nightlife spread through the modern districts. Getting in and around is straightforward by road and intercity bus from Larnaca and Limassol, while Larnaca International Airport is the main gateway for most visitors.
